VA. UNION SURVIVES LIVINGSTONE UPSET BID

Charlotte, NC - Virginia Union University survived a strong upset bid and held off Livingstone College 69-64 in the first round of the 31st annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Tournament at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

The Lady Blue Bears came out of the blocks and built the biggest lead of the game 27-15 with 6:25 left in the first half, but the Lady Panthers put together a 16-4 run and tied the score 31-all on Denae Kennedy's lay-up with 2:31 left.  LC did manage to regain the lead and went into the locker room up by three 36-33.

In the second half LC managed to control the game, but could not pull away as VUU stayed in striking distance and took the lead for good 57-55 on Andrea Colbert's lay-up with 6:54 left.

The Lady Panthers out rebounded the Lady Blue Bears 59-39, but the big mark of the contest was 76 free throws shot between the two teams.  LC made 23 of 32 and VUU was 26 of 44 from the charity stripe.

With the win, VUU improved to 13-15 and LC closes out their season 8-19.

The Lady Panthers who are the #3 seed from the East advances to play the #2 seed in the West, N.C. Central at 3:00 pm on Tuesday (Feb. 28) in the second round.
