Bowie State survives thriller against Winston-Salem State

February 28, 2006

CHARLOTTE – The final women’s basketball game of the day turned out to be one of the best during Monday’s CIAA Tournament action at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

Bowie State survived 52-51 in the nightcap against Winston-Salem State in the tournament’s first round but only after the Lady Rams’ Shalonda Carter missed a short jumper and a final in-bounds possession with 0.7 seconds left was deflected by the Lady Bulldogs. The victory means Bowie State (13-15), seeded fourth in the Eastern Division, advances to the quarterfinal round against Western Division champion Johnson C. Smith Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lady Rams ended their season at 9-18 overall.

The contest was the final one for Lady Rams’ coach John Williams, who is leaving after this season, but Winston-Salem went down swinging. But All-CIAA performer Allyson Swailes (16 points, 13 rebounds) sparked the Lady Bulldogs to victory. Carter, also named to the All-CIAA team, led Winston-Salem State with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The game was also the last for the Lady Rams in the CIAA as they prepare a move to Division I.

Chanel Turner added nine points for Bowie State, and Markeya Watson, Krystle Earle and Kenyail Johnson each chipped in eight points. Keoshia Worthy and Latoya Armstrong each scored nine points for the Lady Rams.
