(CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA - February 28, 2006) Johnson C. Smith entered the quarterfinal game as the top ranked team in the CIAA Western Division and dropped the fourth seed in the Eastern Division, Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs 65-54.
Bowie State opened the game with a 5-0 advantage but JCSU countered with a 16-0 run to break the game open. BSU's Genet Moore stopped the Lady Golden Bulls run with a jumper from the right elbow at 10:47. However, Brittany Sumter's three-ball began another run, this time for eight unanswered points and a commanding 24-8 lead by the 9:18 mark of the first half. The Lady Bulldogs didn't panic with the deficit and trailed by only ten points, 32-22 at the half. The Lady Golden Bulls connected on 12 of 21 first half field goal attempts (57.1 percent), which included four of seven from behind the arc. BSU converted eight of its 19 first half attempts (42.1 percent) and 4 of 9 from three-point land.
The Lady Bulldogs cut the Lady Golden Bulls lead to five (38-33) in the first six minutes but would no closer.
Ashley Chase and Rochelle Bodie paced Johnson C. Smith with 23 and 13 points respectively. Bowie State was led by Genet Moore and Allyson Swailes with 15 points each. Swailes also led both teams in rebounds with 12.
Bowie State ends their season with a record of 13-16 while Johnson C. Smith improves to 19-9 on the year. The JCSU Lady Golden Bulls advance to Friday's (3/3) semifinals to face Elizabeth City State at 1:00 P.M. in the Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
