SHAW, VIRGINIA STATE TOP DAY ONE CIAA BASEBALL TOURNEY
NC Central Eagles Rally Late to Eliminate ECSU Vikings

PETERSBURG, VA- Shaw University and Virginia State University were victorious in their opening games to advance in the winner's bracket in day one action of the 2007 CIAA Baseball Tournament.

In game one, the Shaw University Bears earned their way to a semi-final appearance with a 10-6 upset over the top seeded North Carolina Central. All-CIAA catcher Averill Bryant paced the Bears with two doubles and 3 RBI while teammates Avery Bryant and Fred Miller homered in the 9th inning to seal the win for the 4th seeded Bears.

The Virginia State Trojans used a four run 8th inning to outlast Elizabeth City State University 14-7. The Trojans held a 9-2 advantage entering the 7th inning until the Vikings reeled off five runs to close the gap to 9-7 before VSU's 8th inning outburst. The Trojans will battle the Bears in tomorrow's opener at 11:00am.

In the nightcap the Eagles used a big 8th inning to propel themselves past the Vikings 14-13. The game entered the top of 8th knotted at 7 apiece. The Vikings posted six runs to take a 13-7 lead. Then a subsequent bottom of the inning collapse by ECSU gave way to a 7-run onslaught by the Eagles for the one run victory.

All games will be played at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University.
