TROJANS, BEARS SET TO BATTLE FOR BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Holt's Heroics Propel Trojans to Finals; Shaw Bears Ground NCCU Eagles

April 20, 2007

PETERSBURG, VA- The Shaw University Bears and Virginia State Trojans will meet on Saturday afternoon to decide the 2007 CIAA Baseball Champion.

The game will represent a rematch of last year's final where the Bears emerged as the 2006 Champions. If they are to repeat, they will have to beat the Trojans at 1:00pm to force a tiebreaker since Virginia State defeated Shaw 7-5 Friday afternoon.

The Trojans owe their 2007 Championship appearance to the bat of Andrew Holt. With the game knotted 5-5 with one out in the bottom of the 9th, Holt, a 2007 CIAA All-Rookie Selection, smashed a 2-run walk off homer for the dramatic 7-5 victory. Holt finished the day with 3 RBI on 2 hits as the Trojans up their record to 21-29 overall.

The Shaw Bears rebounded in a big way, crushing the Eagles of NC Central University 19-10. The Bears went ahead early (6-0) in the top of the 1st inning and the Eagles responded in their half of the 2nd inning with four runs, but that was the closest the score would get. The Eagle defense committed nine errors and offensively the Bear's bats connected on 15 hits. NCCU finishes the year at 21-24 overall while the Bears improve to 24-20 on the year.

An automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Playoffs will be at stake when the Bears and Trojans meet Saturday to decide the 2007 CIAA Baseball Champion. Game time slated for 1:00pm at Whaley Colbert Field on the Virginia State University campus.
