The Lady Golden Bulls dominate Saint Augustine's, 58-45

February 26, 2007

CHARLOTTE, NC - In first round action of the 62nd Annual CIAA Tournament Johnson C. Smith (15-13) dominated the St. Augustine's (6-22) to advance to the second round. The #6 seeded Lady Golden Bulls will face the defending CIAA Champions #3 Shaw University at 9:00 pm on February 27, 2007.

In the first half it was all Carolina Gold, as JCSU took total control of the game and never once looked back. It took Saint Augustine's three minutes to score their first basket. The Lady Falcons would get as close as two points to catching the Lady Golden Bulls but close was just not good enough. Johnson C. Smith converted 16-of-27 (59.3%) from the field and shot 40 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Smith scored 18 points in the paint and 17 points off 16 St. Augustine's turnovers. The Lady Falcons only shot 21.7 percent in the first half making only five-of-23 from the field. The only thing that went well for the Lady Falcons in the first half was their free-throw shooting as they shot 75 percent to JCSU's 14.3 percent. The first half belonged to Rochelle Bodie of JCSU who led both teams with 12 points. Smith would go to recess with a commanding 35-14 led over the Lady Flacons.

St. Augustine's came out in the second half looking like a brand new team as they went on a 12-0 run to start the second half. The Lady Golden Bulls looked like a team that was just fresh off the bus not scoring their first field goal until 13:31 in the second. St. Augustine's would get as close as 11 points of JCSU at one point but Smith would maintain the led throughout the game to gain the victory 58-45. St. Augustine's shot 32.4 percent converting on 11-of-16 improving form the first half. The Golden Bulls would not shoot as well as they did in the first half making only seven-of-20 (35%) from the field.

JCSU would have three players in double-figures led by Bodie with 18 points and she also recorded another double-double with game-high 16 rebounds. Also scoring in double-figures was Janai Jackson with 11 points and Shemika Jones who chipped in 10 points. LaConya Polk led the Lady Falcons with 13 points.

The Lady Golden Bulls will go on to face the Lady Bears of Shaw University at 9:00 pm tomorrow night. Johnson C. Smith defeated Shaw in both meetings this season.
