Falcons Eliminate Top Seeded Bears In Extra Innings;
Earn Spot In Baseball Semis

PETERSBURG, VA-The Virginia State Trojans and Elizabeth City State Vikings advanced in the winner's bracket at day one of the 2008 CIAA Baseball Tournament.
In game one the 4th seeded Vikings scored in all but two of the nine innings to drop Shaw University 17-11. The Vikings jumped ahead early by scoring four runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Then home runs from Troy Andrews, J.J. House and Nick Johnson helped keep the Bear's pitching staff at bay for the remainder of the game. The Bear's did rally in fourth and seventh inning with 4 and 3 runs scored respectively. However with ECSU leading 14-11 in the top of the eighth, Johnson's three RBI blast over center field solidified ECSU's place in the winner's bracket Tuesday morning.
In the tourney's second matchup, the Virginia State Trojans surrendered two runs in the top of the first before recouping with nine runs of their own on the way to a 12-5 rout of Saint Augustine's College. The Trojans added three more runs over the next two innings and did not cross home plate again. Not that it was needed since their nine-run outburst in the first was more than enough cushion for the victory. Jeff Shelton went the distance for the Trojans striking out seven while Brandon Crump accounted for VSU's one run in the second inning with a solo home run. Crump finished the game 2-4 with 3 RBI.
In the nightcap the Shaw Bears were ousted in the double elimination tournament, falling victim to their cross-town rivals the Saint Augustine's Falcons 17-9 in extra innings. In the top of the eleventh, the Falcons sealed the deal by scoring eight runs on the exhausted Bears. Shaw finishes the season 29-9 overall, the best record in school history.
All games will be played on the campus of Virginia State University at Whaley Colbert Field.
