BOWIE STATE, VIRGINIA STATE REMAIN UNBEATEN AFTER FIRST DAY

PETERSBURG, Va. - Bowie State and Virginia State each went 2-0
on the first day of 2008 CIAA Double-Elimination Softball
Championships at Petersburg Sports Complex on Thursday (April
17).
For their efforts, both teams remained in the winner's bracket
where they will square off Friday (April 18) on Virginia State's
home field at 12:30 p.m. Virginia State swept both games during the
regular season.
Bowie State (22-8), the 2007 CIAA champion, earned the right to
play Virginia State by defeating Shaw 10-2 and Johnson C. Smith
7-3. Virginia State (22-13) recorded shutouts in their two wins,
beat Saint Augustine's 8-0 and Fayetteville State 2-0.
Also on Friday, Saint Augustine's College faces Fayetteville State
(19-15) and Johnson C. Smith (20-9) plays Shaw in the loser's
bracket. Both games will be played at Petersburg Sports Complex at
10 a.m.
After losing their opening games, Saint Augustine's (6-20) and Shaw
(6-16) each earned a win in the loser's bracket Thursday. Saint
Augustine's beat Elizabeth City State in a 14-13 thriller and Shaw
downed Virginia Union 16-6. The losses eliminated Elizabeth City
State and Virginia Union from the tournament.
The CIAA Championships will continue through Saturday (April
18).
