Falcons Sweep 2008 CIAA Indoor Track and Field Titles

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2008 CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships turned out to be another coronation for Saint Augustine's College.
The Falcons won both the CIAA men's and women's titles in convincing fashion Sunday (Feb. 10) at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center. The indoor championships were the 37th overall for the Falcons (23 - Men, 14 - Women), who are the defending 2007 NCAA Division II Men and Women Indoor Champions.
The Falcons scored 218 points to easily win the men's title. Bowie State finished second with 73 points, followed by Virginia State with 55 points.
The Falcons - led by track MVP Chayce Smith and field MVP Joe Kindred - won 10 of 14 men's events. Smith won the one-mile run and 800 run, and Kindred, the 2007 CIAA indoor field MVP, won the high jump and long jump. Other Falcon winners included Jamal Cumberbatch (triple jump), the men's distance medley team (Ken Samoei, Chayce Smith, Maurice Miles, Elzie Coleman), Dior Lowry (60 hurdles), Dennis Boone (60 dash), Ken Samoei (5,000 run) and the 4x400 relay team (Christopher Cox, Alvin Miles, Sharif Nash, Rashaud Johnston).
The Lady Falcons scored 151 points to claim the women's crown. Bowie State finished second with 113 points, and Virginia State was third with 91 points.
Erica Young captured the 400 dash and 800 dash to win track MVP honors. She led the Lady Falcons to 8 victories in 12 events. Other Lady Falcon winners included Lakischa Fontenot (high jump), Treva Hutchinson (long jump, 200 dash), the women's distance medley team (Sharona Brown, Brittney Griffin, Patrecia Daniley, Barbara Pierre), Barbara Pierre (60 dash) and the 4x400 relay team (Aisha George, Krya Mobley, Erica Young, Sheena Johns).
Elaine Rhoades of Bowie State was selected the female field MVP.
Other indoor winners included DeMara Parrish of Bowie State (women's triple jump), Marquis Davis of Virginia Union (men's shot put), Camelia Blake of Virginia State (women's 60 hurdles), Ledford Green of Johnson C. Smith (200 dash, 400 dash), Shannon Boiling of Virginia State (men's pole vault), Lakesha Carney of Bowie State (women's shot put) and Charlene Hymon of Virginia State (women's 1-mile run).
