FALCONS, LADY BULLDOGS LEAD CIAA TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

PETERSBURG, Va. - The Saint Augustine's College men and the Bowie
State women are the leaders after the first day of the 2009 CIAA
Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (April 17) at
Virginia State University's campus.
The Falcons, the CIAA defending champions and 2009 NCAA Division II
Indoor National Champions, lead the men's standings after six
events with 56.75 points followed by Bowie State University with
42.50 points and Virginia Union University with 32.75 points.
Virginia State University is fourth with 31.75 points followed by
Johnson C. Smith University with 10.50 points, Shaw University with
3.75 points and Saint Paul's College with 2 points.
The Falcons were led by jumper Joe Kindred and distance runner
Johnny Shuping. Kindred won the long jump with a leap of 7.47
meters and Shuping won the 1500 run in 3:55. Chayce Smith of the
Falcons was second in the 1500 in 3:58.
The Lady Bulldogs head the women's standings with 52 points after
six events. Saint Augustine's College, the CIAA defending champion,
is second with 35.50 points followed by Virginia State University
with 34 points, Johnson C. Smith University with 20.50 points, Shaw
University with 11 points and Saint Paul's College with 3
points.
The championship meet concludes Saturday at VSU starting at 10 a.m.
