DURHAM, N.C. – Elizabeth City State University and Bowie
State University remain unbeaten in the double-elimination
championship baker format Sunday (March 22) on Day 2 of the 2009
CIAA Women’s Bowling Championships at AMF Durham Lanes.
The three-day tournament concludes Monday (March 23) with
quarterfinals, semifinals and finals starting at 9 a.m. Six teams
are left in the championships.
Elizabeth City State and Bowie State square off in the
winner’s bracket while Saint Augustine’s College faces
Virginia State University and Saint Paul’s College tangles
with Fayetteville State University in the elimination bracket
Monday.
In Sunday’s opening-round of the championship baker format,
Elizabeth City State beat Saint Augustine’s College 4-0,
Virginia State University topped Johnson C. Smith University 4-1,
Bowie State University beat Shaw 4-2 and Fayetteville State
University downed Saint Paul’s College 4-2.
In the winner’s bracket, Elizabeth City State beat Virginia
State 4-2-1 and Bowie State downed Fayetteville State 4-0. In the
elimination bracket, Saint Augustine’s ousted Johnson C.
Smith 4-3 and Saint Paul’s eliminated Shaw 4-1.
The teams were seeded in the championship format based on points
tallied from team matches and baker matches Saturday and
Sunday.
Elizabeth City State was the top seed with 30 points followed by
second seed Bowie State with 26 points and third seed Virginia
State with 23 points. Fayetteville State was seeded fourth with 22
points, Saint Paul’s was seeded fifth with 18 points and
Johnson C. Smith was seeded sixth with 14 points. Both Shaw and
Saint Augustine’s College had 9 points each but Shaw was
seeded seventh based on total pin falls.
Livingstone College and Virginia Union University scored five and
four points, respectively, and failed to reach the championship
round.
