FAYETTEVILLE STATE, CHOWAN TO MEET IN CIAA VOLLEYBALL FINAL

Western Division Rivals Set To Square Off For 2009 Championship Crown

HAMPTON, VA- Fayetteville State University and Chowan University will meet Sunday afternoon to decide the 2009 CIAA Volleyball Champion.

Game time is slated for a 1:00pm start at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. The Lady Broncos, appearing in their third straight Final, will be looking to capture their second CIAA Championship in the past three seasons (2007) while Chowan will look to establish themselves a permanent force to be reckoned with as the conference's newest member.

Both teams swept their respective semifinal matches to set up Sunday's Western Division showdown. The Lady Broncos disposed of Saint Augustine's 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 while the Hawks, in their first CIAA Volleyball tournament as a conference member, edged last season's champ Elizabeth City State 25-23, 25-21, 27-25.

The Final will pit two of the leagues dominant forces in three-time CIAA Player of the Year Chekimbrell Jefferson (FSU) and CIAA Rookie of the Year Karina Monroe (Chowan). In 2009 the Lady Hawks dethroned Fayetteville State as the Western Division champion although the two teams split their two regular season meetings. The Lady Broncos went a 5-game rally at home of September 22 winning 3-2 while Chowan took their October 29th meeting in Murfreesboro.

Fayetteville State def. Saint Augustine's 25-20, 25-20, 25-23
Chowan def. Elizabeth City State 25-23, 25-21, 27-25

Sunday, November 8, 2009 (CIAA Volleyball Championship)
