2010 CIAA MEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST DAY RESULTS

Petersburg, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association kicked off the first day of the Men’s Tennis Championships on Thursday, April 15th from the Virginia State Tennis Complex. The conference has elected to alter of the format of this year’s championships. Instead of individual seeding by flight, teams will face each other in a single elimination, first to five match points tournament.
Johnson C. Smith moved past St. Paul’s College 5-0 due to the Tigers only have four participants. Jason Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) and Aaron Hutcherson (Cincinnati, OH) defeated Damon Simpson and Aaron Morris in No. 1 doubles play. McKenzie Bean (Hamilton, Bermuda) and Robert Butts (Atlanta, GA) topped William Isler and Marlon Buchanan at the second doubles position. Both matches were won 8-0 and the third doubles match was awarded to Jamil Jones (Atlanta, GA) and Jerald Stuckey (Cincinnati, OH) by default.
Jones and junior Barren Smith (Linwood, NJ) won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles competition by default to pick up the victory for JCSU.
In the second match, Virginia State defeated Chowan University 5-0. The Trojans took all three doubles competitions for an early 3-0 lead heading into singles play. John Lanier and Daron Jack took the No. 1 doubles, followed by Amir James and William Richardson winning the second doubles match; both were 8-0 victories. Travis Jones and Harrison Gaskins were victorious in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively for the VSU win. Singles matches one through four went unfinished.
In the final men’s match of the evening, St. Augustine’s edged past Virginia Union University 5-0. The Falcons took all three doubles matches. Coyatito Smith beat Martin House (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 5 singles slot and Roe capped the win for SAC with a victory (6-0, 6-0) over Orlando Nelson. Singles matches one through four went unfinished.
Semifinal matches will begin on Friday afternoon (April16th) at the VSU Tennis Complex. Shaw, who received a day one bye, will face St. Augustine’s at 1:00 pm, followed by Johnson C. Smith against Virginia State at 3:00 pm. Both winners will compete in the championship finals on Saturday, April 17th.
