2010 CIAA WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST DAY RESULTS
Bowie State, Johnson C. Smith, Virginia State, and Shaw earn wins

Petersburg, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association kicked off the first day of the Women’s Tennis Championships on Thursday, April 15th from the Virginia State Tennis Complex. The conference has elected to alter of the format of this year’s championships. Instead of individual seeding by flight, teams will face each other in a single elimination, first to five match points tournament.
Bowie State University topped Elizabeth City State University 5-3 in the initial contest of the afternoon. The Lady Vikings held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Krystyan Fleming earned the third match point for ECSU with a No. 2 singles victory (6-2, 6-0) against Lydia Mahon. However, BSU snatched wins in singles three through six; plus the No. 2 doubles victory by Kyara Lombre and Chelyce Fields for the Lady Bulldogs to advance.
In the second match, JCSU defeated Chowan University 5-0. The Golden Bulls took all three doubles competitions for an early 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Margaret Jones and Camille Allen were victorious in No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively for J.C. Smith win. Singles matches one through three and six went unfinished.
Virginia State eliminated Virginia Union University 5-0 in the following competition. The Lady Trojans trumped VUU in the three doubles matches. Tamilia Hicks and Asia Thomas sealed the victory for VSU with wins in No. 3 and No. 6 singles play, respectively.
In the final women’s match of the evening, Shaw recorded an 8-0 win against Saint Augustine’s College. The Lady Bears took all doubles and singles matches with the exception of the No. 4 singles competition, which went unfinished.
Semifinal matches will begin on Friday morning (April16th) at the VSU Tennis Complex. Shaw will face Bowie State at 9:00 am, followed by Johnson C. Smith against Virginia State at 11:00 am. Both winners will compete in the championship finals on Saturday, April 17th.
