St. Augustine’s Captures First Baseball Title Since 1999

PETERSBURG, VA-The third time proved to be the charm as the Saint Augustine’s College Falcons downed Virginia State University 6-3 to earn the 2010 CIAA Baseball Championship.

It was the third consecutive time the Falcons had met Virginia State in the Finals however Saturday yielded a different result as SAC claimed its first baseball crown since 1999.
The Trojan got on the board first when back-to-back RBI singles scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Falcons quickly answered when Tournament MVP Kevin Johnson’s 2 RBI single to right center tied the game. The Trojans added a run in the second and held that lead until the bottom of the fourth when an error in right field yielded the final tie of the contest.
In the sixth inning the Falcons put the game away courtesy of more heroics from Johnson. The inning’s lead-off man, Johnson singled up the middle then stole both second and third base and then scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch by Trojan pitcher Caleb Lee. Four batters later the Falcons’ Wayne Lewis’ 2 RBI single drove in the final two runs of the game.
From that point on only two Trojans reached with neither advancing beyond first base. The Falcons’ Brandon Stewart, an All-Tournament Selection, went the distance in the win as SAC improves to 35-19 on the year.
The Trojans’ season ends at 25-21 overall.
