Semi-Final Matchups Set in CIAA Volleyball Tournament

November 5, 2010

(HAMPTON, VA) – While all four top seeds advanced to Saturday’s CIAA Volleyball Tournament semi-finals, there was a little shakeup at the top as Fayetteville State handed Elizabeth City State its first CIAA loss of the season to take the top spot in Pool A in action Friday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.

The win gives the Lady Broncos the top spot in Pool A, and they will take on Chowan – the second-place team in Pool B – at 5:00 p.m. Saturday.  In the other semi-final game, Saint Augustine’s – the winner of Pool B – will take on Elizabeth City State at 7:00 p.m.

All four semi-final teams entered the last game Friday at 2-0 with semi-final spots already clinched.  The games – two of the most hotly contested of the day – were played to determine seeding in the semis.

Elizabeth City State entered the tournament 18-0 in the CIAA and the top seed in the Northern Division, and won its first two matches of the day.  Against Fayetteville State – second seed in the South – the Lady Vikings suffered their first CIAA loss, 25-20, 28-26 and 27-25.

The match was one of the closest of the day – in a day that saw mainly lopsided, straight set matches.  Only three of the 12 games went more than three sets, including Elizabeth City State’s earlier 3-1 win over Virginia State.

The other match of semi-finalists also went four sets as Saint Augustine’s earned its top finish in Pool B with a 25-19, 25-22, 15-25, and 25-19 win over Chowan.  Both the Lady Falcons and Lady Broncos finished round robin play 3-0.  Chowan and Elizabeth City finish quarterfinal play with 2-1 marks.

Livingstone (fourth seed in the South) finished pool play with a 1-2 record, as did Winston-Salem State (third seed in the South).  Virginia State (third seed in the North) and Virginia Union (fourth seed in the North) finished the quarterfinals with an 0-3 mark.

The winners of the two semi-final matches will meet in the finals on Sunday at 1:00.  All games are held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex and are free and open to the public.
