Chowan to Play Saint Augustine’s for CIAA Volleyball Crown

(HAMPTON, VA) – Chowan and Saint Augustine’s earned places in the CIAA Volleyball Championship with 3-0 and 3-1 wins, respectively, in action at the Boo Williams Sportsplex this evening.

In the first match of the doubleheader, Chowan easily handled Fayetteville State 25-21, 25-14 and 25-15 to clinch a return visit to the championships.  Chowan won last year’s championship over Elizabeth City State.   The win gives Chowan a 21-12 record on the season, while the Lady Broncos finish their season 16-8.

Victoria Lewis led the Hawks with 16 kills and 11 digs, and had a .306 attack percentage.  Callie Armistead led both teams with 26 assists.

For the Lady Broncos, Octavia Wynn had 14 kills and a .219 attack percentage, Achari Mainor had 13 assists, and Jamisha Jordan had ten digs.

Saint Augustine’s broke up the rematch of last year’s championship match with a 25-18, 25-13, 23-25, and 25-16 win over the Lady Vikings.  After cruising to win the first two games in the set, Saint Augustine’s struggled in the third, but sprinted to a quick fourth set win.

ECSU had not lost a match in CIAA play until Friday evening when they finished round robin play with a 3-0 loss to Fayetteville State.

Saint Augustine’s goes into tomorrow’s championship match 25-8.  Elizabeth City State finishes tournament play with a 22-7 mark.

For the Lady Falcons, Kathryn Tokarski had 18 kills, Roxanne Smith had 42 assists and Nicolette Campbell had 22 digs.

Whitney Green had 10 kills to lead the Lady Vikings.  Morgan Cary had 18 assists and Cassie Noe had 30 digs.

The final is Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.  Admission is free and those in attendance will have a chance to win one of eight $250 Food Lion gift certificates.
