Eight Teams Set for 2018 CIAA Women’s Tennis Championship

Charlotte, NC (April 17, 2018) – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) will host its 2018 Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 19 – Saturday, April 21, 2018. The event will be held at Bowie State University at the Bowie State University Tennis Center in Bowie, Maryland. Opening ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2018. The championship is free and open to the public.

The women's tennis bracket will kick off the championship event at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday in a matchup between 2018 Northern Division Champion Virginia State University (No. 3) and No. 6 Fayetteville State University. The Trojans went undefeated at 6-0 in divisional play (8-3 Conference; 11-4 Overall), while the Broncos were downed 2-6 in the Southern Division (4-8 Conference; 4-10 Overall).

No. 2 Johnson C. Smith University (6-2 Southern Division; 10-2 Conference; 14-9 Overall) will meet No. 7 Elizabeth City State University (2-4 Northern Division; 2-9 Conference; 2-9 Overall) after the conclusion of match one between Virginia State and Fayetteville State. In their regular season head-to-head competition, Johnson C. Smith swept Elizabeth City State 9-0.

The third match of the day will feature defending champion and 2018 Southern Division Champion Shaw University (No. 1) and No. 8 Bowie State University.  The Lady Bears went undefeated at 8-0 in divisional play (12-0 Conference; 17-2 Overall), while the Bulldogs were downed 0-6 in the Northern Division (1-10 Conference; 3-10 Overall).

The final match of opening day will feature the No. 4 seed Winston-Salem State University versus No. 5 seed Virginia Union University. The Rams defeated the Panthers in their head-to-head matchup 6-0, but the Panthers are looking for an upset. The Rams finished third in the Southern Division with a 4-4 Southern Division Record (8-4 Conference; 9-8 Overall) while The Panthers recorded a 4-2 Northern Division record (6-5 Conference; 10-6 Overall).

The first 2018 CIAA Women's Tennis Championship Semi-Finals game is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 20th with the second game to immediately follow.
