2017 CIAA Board of Directors' Spring Meeting Recap

Charlotte, NC (June 16, 2017) - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) held its annual spring meetings May 15-17 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The three-day gathering included individual association meetings by the conference's Directors of Athletics, Senior Woman Administrators, Faculty Athletics Representatives, Management Council, and Board of Directors. The General Assembly meeting provided a platform for the conference staff and associations to provide accomplishment updates for the 2016-17 academic year.

The below topics were discussed by the CIAA Board of Directors, which is comprised of the presidents and chancellors of all 12 member institutions.

Championship Locations

The CIAA Board of Directors Long-Range Planning Committee reviewed 2016-17 championship locations, including an assessment of the eight (8) championships relocated last September. The Committee highlighted the importance for student-athletes to compete in their communities while contributing impact and igniting change to develop safe and beneficial championship environments. The proposed 2017-18 championship site locations were approved, including a 3-year football contract with Salem, Virginia and the decision to fulfill the final year a previously drawn 3-year contract with JDL FastTrack in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field. Currently in a Northern Division rotation, the Board will re-evaluate the Southern Division rotation for championships in 2018-19 and beyond.

The Board reviewed the annual Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament, hosted in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was approved to continue toward the contract fulfillment of hosting the championship in the Queen City through 2020.  Additionally, a tournament sub-committee was reinstated to evaluate data and review future bid specifications, ticket structures, marketing strategies, game formats, and scheduling of the championship through 2020 and beyond.

Two-Year Waivers

The Bylaws Committee reviewed an amendment to the conference's two-year waiver process. Two-year waivers will now be first reviewed by the Bylaws Committee with any repeals being assessed by the full 12-member Board of Directors.

Sport Sponsorship/Expansion

Discussion regarding the conference's sports sponsorship policy expansion package was led by the Bylaws and Membership committees. While the importance of maintaining equity among all existing and future membership institutions was discussed, the Board considered opportunities for growth and strength of the conference. A new sponsorship policy which will allow an institution without football to become a full member of the conference was approved. For consideration, prospective member institutions must meet all remaining policy requirements and expectations. The conference's ability to sign member institutions who do not carry football is contingent on the approval of a new distribution model.

Conference Budget

The Board reviewed the income and expenses of the conference for the 2016-17 fiscal year as a proposed budget, submitted by the Budget and Finance Committee, for the upcoming term was assessed and approved. The budget for the 2017-18 season was installed as the conference enters a new media rights and sponsorship partnership. The CIAA, a non-profit organization, continues to rely on its annual basketball tournament which accounts for 60% of the conference's financial support. After reviewing market rates in the CIAA's volleyball and softball footprint, the Board built in an increase of officials' fees for the two women's programs in the upcoming year's budget.

Board Elections

This year marked the conclusion of the Board's 2014-2016 Chair and Vice Chair term, held by Dr. Ronald L. Carter of Johnson C. Smith University and Dr. James A. Anderson of Fayetteville State University, respectively. As elected by their colleagues, Dr. Anderson will serve as the Board Chair and Dr. Makola Abdullah of Virginia State University will serve as Vice Chair for the 2017-19 term.

The CIAA celebrates the service and leadership of Dr. Carter (JCSU) and Dr. Mickey L. Burnim (BSU) as they close their tenures in higher education. Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams and the CIAA staff recognize their incredible achievements on campus, in the conference, and nationally within the NCAA. Meanwhile, the CIAA welcomes Dr. Brenda Allen who has been appointed President of Lincoln (PA) University.
