SAAC Begins "Get 60" Program to Promote Healthy Activity Habits
February 20, 2006
DURHAM, N.C. -- Twenty North Carolina Central University student-athletes spent the afternoon with fourth and fifth grade students at the Quality Education Institute of Durham elementary school on Friday (Feb. 17) as part of the opening ceremony of the "Get 60" program, hosted by the NCCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
The NCCU student-athletes showed the youngsters snacks that are delicious and nutritious, then participated in physical activities such as freeze tag and relay racing.
With the number of overweight children on the rise, the "Get 60" program's goal is to establish healthy exercise habits that will benefit them now and throughout their lives.
The program is a six-week, turnkey mentorship project that promotes daily physical activity among elementary-school students and helps them understand that there are many ways to be active.
NCCU student-athletes volunteer and visit local classrooms to engage children in physical activities to help them reach activity goals of 60 minutes per day.
