Bowie State men and women finish fourth at UMES Invitational
(PRINCESS ANNE, MARYLAND – The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs Track & Field teams placed fourth in their respective divisions over the weekend at the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore Invitational. Senior Robert DeVaul was the highlight of the meet, setting new Bowie State indoor records in the High Jump (7’3”) and Long Jump (23’). What makes the high jump record so special is that fact that he (DeVaul) is only 5’8” tall. “Robert, or “B” as we like to call him, was just feeling it today,” said a very proud BSU Head Coach Marc Harrison. “He told me that he would make a statement today and he did!”
Other highlights for the men include Bruce Owens’ first place finish in the 200 meter (22.62) and second place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.89. Harrison says, “Owens is learning how to be a college sprinter now and Coach Tee (Teyarnte’ Carter) is doing great things with him.”
Freshman Timberly Bolden performed well in the Long Jump (18’2¼”), placing third overall and came in fifth in the High Jump (5’2”). Bolden’s long jump distance was a new Bowie State record, surpassing Damara Parrish’s mark of 18’1” set last season. The BSU women’s 4x400 team (Ricci Alleyne, Damara Parrish, Jennifer Geter and Sarah Clay) placed second in the event with a time of 3:58.65. “Our women’s confidence is growing … These women are realizing they are a force to be reckoned with in every event … 2006 will be very interesting,” said Harrison.
Harrison summed up Bowie State efforts by saying, “I think we showed the colleges in Maryland that we can compete with them.” Bowie State’s next competition will take place Saturday, January 7, 2006 at the Gulden Relays hosted by Bucknell University.
