HAMPTON, Va. - The Board of Directors for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association has donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross to be utilized in the assistance of the citizens of the Gulf Region affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
“We wanted to have a direct impact on the people,
specifically the families and children devastated from the
aftermath of Katrina and Rita,” Commissioner Leon G. Kerry
said. “We have had a positive five-year relationship with the
American Red Cross and they will service as the vehicle to carry
out the Board’s directives.”
The CIAA-American Red Cross partnership began with the Diversity
Task Force, organized by Tanya Frazier of the American Red Cross.
The Task Force seeks methods to educate African-Americans about the
need for life-saving blood donations and to promote community
awareness of American Red Cross services.
The CIAA Basketball Tournament has been a designated event for American Red Cross blood donations and educational booths since 2001.
