Lawrenceville, VA -- The president of Saint Paul's College is leaving to take a job at Paul Quinn College in Texas, school officials announced this week.

John K. Waddell, 44, has been at Saint Paul's for five years and was starting a new five-year contract. He was appointed by President Bush in 2002 to the President's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

"We're really going to miss him," said Keathen Wilson, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the Episcopal Church-affiliated school. "He's been an outstanding leader for Saint Paul's College."

During Waddell's tenure at Saint Paul's, enrollment increased to about 700, the college gained provisional state accreditation for its teacher education program and brought back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association football after a 15-year hiatus.

Paul Quinn College, with about 900 students, is a member of the United Negro College Fund and is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
