CIAA Highlights 2006 Fall Coaches of the Year

November 13, 2006

Hampton, VA...The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Executive Committee announces this year's CIAA Fall Coaches of the Year.

Michael Lawson of North Carolina Central University was claimed the Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second straight year.  This year also celebrates the second year that the North Carolina Central Lady Eagles have won the CIAA Women's Cross Country Championship.

An esteemed USA Track Coach and legendary Falcons leader, George Williams of St. Augustine's College has earned CIAA Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.  Coach Williams brought the Men's Cross Country title back home to Raleigh this season with a significant lead over the second place finisher.

Georgette Crawford-Crooks joins Lawson as the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University celebrate Coach Crawford-Crooks as Volleyball Coach of the Year.   In Crawford-Crooks' first year leading the NCCU squad, she defended her Championship title, all while keeping the team undefeated in CIAA Play.  The Lady Eagles entered the championship tournament as Western Division regular season champions.

The Elizabeth City State University Mighty Vikings have a lot to be proud of, especially the performance of 2006 Football Coach of the Year, Waverly Tillar.  The Vikings have made a charge to the top of the conference; falling short of a possible championship title by mere seconds on the clock.  The Vikings have also been a steady in the Southeast Region polls this season. They are currently ranked 4th and will play in the first round of the NCAA D-II playoff.

Steve Wallace, of the St. Paul's College Lady Tigers had produced some of the CIAA's top bowlers.  Coach Wallace finished third in this year's championship, keeping their standing in the CIAA as contenders for the Championship.  Wallace and the St. Paul's Lady Tigers finished the season with a 42-18 record.

The 2006-2007 CIAA Coaches of the Year will be honored in May at the Annual CIAA Coach of the Year Luncheon in Durham, NC.
