2007 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team Announced

2007 CIAA COMMISSIONER'S ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM ANNOUNCED

HAMPTON, VA - Twenty student-athletes from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association have been named to the 10th annual CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team.

"This is an extraordinary group of student-athletes that have pushed their strengths and abilities to new limits," said CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry. "They represent the CIAA and all that it stands for. This 10th All-Academic Team is dedicated to future student-athletes who will follow in their footsteps to one day become the leaders of tomorrow."
The 2007 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team recognizes 20 student-athletes, 10 on the First Team and 10 on the Second Team, as voted on by the CIAA-Sports Information Directors' Association. The average grade point average of the First Team is a 3.830, and the average for the Second Team is a 3.739 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

The 2007 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic First Team consists of Christina Hager of Elizabeth City State; Desirae Riddick of Johnson C. Smith; Chanel Raynor and Latoya Tate of North Carolina Central; Valicia Brown and Issreal Jaimes of Saint Augustine's; Monique Lawson and Daniel Sabogal of Shaw; Mercedes Bell of Virginia State; and Michaela Vanakova of Virginia Union (see list below).

The 2007 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Second Team includes Janine Canlas of Bowie State; Contessa Sanchez, Derek Scott and Deana Wooten of Fayetteville State; Brittany Sumpter of Johnson C. Smith; Shantrice Chapel of Livingstone; Rebecca Hubbard and Lakischa Fontenot of Saint Augustine's; Marquita Pittman of Shaw; and Jermaine LaFate of Virginia State.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at a CIAA institution, earned a minimum 3.20 overall grade point average, and played as a starter or important reserve in a CIAA sanctioned sport.
