Maceo Smith, Former FSU Coach and Educator Dies
Coached Lady Broncos to First CIAA Championship

Fayetteville, NC - Maceo Smith, former basketball and softball coach died Saturday, July 14, 2007 at her home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Smith was a two-sport coach at Fayetteville State University, coaching women's basketball and softball in the early ‘80's.
Smith coached basketball from 1978-1979 seasons, becoming the first woman's coach to win the CIAA Championship in 1979 and the first in the school history. This was the only year she coached basketball at Fayetteville State. When softball was introduced as a varsity sport in 1981 she was named to guide the program. In 1986, she was again called upon to coach the softball team, posting an 8-10 overall record and 5-5 in conference play.
Beside her coaching duties, she was advisor to FSU's cheerleaders from 1990- 1992 and again in 1997-1998. Smith was an instructor in the Health, Physical Education and Human Services Department teaching dance from 1978 until she departed in 2000. She returned in 2005 as an associated professor in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts. The Fayetteville, NC native earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from North Carolina A & T State University in 1978. She went on to earn her masters in Fine Arts from University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Funeral services for Maceo Smith will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2007 in the J.W. Seabrook Auditorium on the campus of Fayetteville State University.
