April 27, 2009
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State Athletic department
honored student-athletes from the winter and spring sports at its
annual Spring Athletic Awards Banquet held Sunday evening at the
K.E. White Graduate Center.
Eva Johnson (volleyball) and Tiffany Johnson (bowling) shared the
honor of Co-Female Athlete of the Year. Both All-CIAA Performers
and MVP's of their respective teams, Eva and Tiffany each led their
squads to CIAA Titles this past season. The volleyball and bowling
championships were the first for both sports in ECSU history and
both ladies were named MVP of their respective conference
tournaments.
The night's biggest honoree however, was senior All-American
basketball standout Anthony Hilliard. Besides being named team MVP,
Male Athlete of the Year and receiving the RL Vaughan Basketball
Award, Hilliard became only the fourth man (Marvin Trotman, Jethro
Pugh, Mike Gale) (and fifth person overall; Celeste Trahan) to have
his jersey retired by the University. He finished his career as the
school's only Two-time CIAA Player of the Year, a three time
All-American and had the distinction of helping guide the Vikings
to their first CIAA Basketball crown (third overall) in 26 years.
He finished his career just shy of 2,000 points and was only the
second Viking in school history to grab 1,000 rebounds.
Other team MVP's included Briana Glover (women's basketball),
Styron Barfield (baseball), Asha Martin (softball), April Whitaker
(tennis), Scott Forbes (golf), Chenetra Bridges (cheerleading),

and JaQuincy Staton (outdoor track). Glover was also the female
recipient for the RL Vaughan Basketball Award.

Education major who displays excellence in both academics and
athletics. George Harris of the ECSU golf team was honored as the
student-athlete with the highest overall GPA for the 2008-09 school
year.
