CIAA Celebrates Fall Sports’ Highest Achievers in Academics

Hampton, VA…The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association has calculated the highest team grade point averages for its Fall Sports. GPA’s are calculated by the previous two semesters; excluding freshmen and are evaluated by the CIAA Faculty Athletic Representatives’ Association. The continued commitment of the CIAA to the academic success of its student-athletes falls in line with the mission of Division II; to create “Life in the Balance”. The Division emphasizes sportsmanship, passion, balance, resourcefulness, learning and service.
Women’s Cross Country- Johnson C. Smith
University, 3.54
The Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls finished their 2010
season with a 3.54 average and a tenth place finish (213) in the
CIAA Championship. This year’s squad consists of three
seniors- including track and field standout Shermaine Williams, two
juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen.
Men’s Cross Country- Livingstone College, 2.91
The Blue Bears scored both on and off the trail- with 200
pts. to finish ninth in the 2010 CIAA Men’s Cross Country
championship and a 2.91 mark in academics. One senior, one
junior, two sophomores and two freshmen ran for Livingstone last
fall.
Football- St. Augustine’s College, 2.83
In fashion with the Falcons’ 2009-10 success in
academics, the 2010 edition of St. Augustine’s football
earned the highest average amongst conference teams, 2.83.
The Falcons finished second in the Southern Division with a 6-1
division, 9-2 overall record, and traveled to Columbus, Georgia to
claim the 2010 Pioneer Bowl against Fort Valley State
University.
Volleyball- Bowie State University, 3.52
The Lady Bulldogs claimed this season’s honor with a
grade point average of 3.52 and a sixth place finish in the
Northern division. With a team of one senior, one junior, six
sophomores and six freshmen including, All-CIAA
2nd team and All-Rookie Team member, Kassandra
Greis, this year’s academic accomplishment almost matches the
top team GPA for fall sports conference-wide.
Teams will be formally recognized by the conference at the 2011 CIAA Spring Meeting, slated for May 16-17 in Newport News, Virginia.
