Chowan's Meredith Long Selected to NCAA Division II/ADA Mentoring Program

March 28, 2011

MURFREESBORO - Meredith Long, Deputy Athletics Director, is one of ten women/minorities to be selected to participate in The NCAA & Division II Athletic Directors Association's Women & Minorities Mentoring Program titled “Mentoring Tomorrow's Leaders.”

The purpose of the program is to match 10 outstanding Division II athletics administrators with 10 committed athletics directors in hopes of building a foundation that will encourage the participants to pursue a long-range career in athletics administration – ideally in Division II.

Said Director of Athletics Dennis Helsel on Long's appointment: "It is indeed an honor for Meredith to be selected in the inaugural year to this program. Her personal and professional development over the past five years made her a prime candidate for this program. This is simply the second step in her continued progression toward greater responsibility and leadership opportunities in senior level management. Her completion of this program will enhance the overall effectiveness of the Chowan intercollegiate athletics program. I cannot wait.”

Long currently serves as the Deputy Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator overseeing Athletic Communications and Operations. She oversees the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on campus and helped initiate the NCAA's CHAMPS/Life Skills program in its first year (2009). She also has sport oversight in volleyball, softball, and women's bowling.

She received her B.S. in Physical Education from Chowan in 1996 and her M.S. in Sport Management from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002.

She is a member of CoSIDA, NCSSIA, CIAA-SIDA, CIAA-SWAA, BC-SIDA, and NACWAA. She is also a recent graduate of the NCAA/NACWAA Institute for Administrative Advancement. She is in her first term (second year) on the NCAA Atlantic Region Volleyball Ranking Committee. In May of 2010 she was named the CIAA's SWA of the Year.
