MURFREESBORO - Chowan University Vice President for Athletics, Dennis Helsel, has been chosen as a mentor in the NCAA & Division II Athletic Directors Association's Women & Minorities Mentoring Program titled “Mentoring Tomorrow's Leaders.” Helsel, who is in his fifth year at the helm of the CU athletic department, has much to offer young and aspiring athletic department leaders. Helsel has over 30 years of intercollegiate athletic experience that includes associations with several NCAA Division I universities as well as an NCAA Division I athletics conference.Dennis Helsel

“I am humbled by the selection and somewhat anxious,” said Helsel.  “It is a great responsibility to impact future leaders in our profession. I accept the challenge and will make sure I am worthy of the selection.”

The purpose of the program is to match 10 outstanding Division II athletics administrators with 10 committed athletics directors in hopes of building a foundation that will encourage the participants to pursue a long-range career in athletics administration – ideally in Division II.

“Dennis Helsel has brought to Chowan University athletics a treasury of experience from a wide range of schools,” stated Chowan University President, Dr. Chris White. “He is a natural teacher, and the young athletic administrators he will mentor will be blessed.”

The program is expected to start in the summer of 2011.
