April 5 Proclaimed Shaw Athletics Day in Raleigh

(Raleigh, NC) – Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker officially proclaimed April 5, 2011, Shaw Athletics Day in recognition of the university’s three CIAA Championship teams in a brief ceremony held at the beginning of Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

In front of a full council chamber, the Shaw men’s and women’s basketball teams received a standing ovation just before the proclamation was read.
 
In part, the proclamation stated that “Shaw University further burnished Raleigh’s illustrious athletic history when its men’s and women’s basketball teams claimed both of the CIAA’s tournament championships,” and also recognized the Shaw football team which won the CIAA Football Championship in the fall.
 
The proclamation was presented to Shaw President Dr. Irma McClaurin.
