Eighty-Seven Student-Athletes Graduate From Saint Augustine’s College

RALEIGH, N.C. – Eighty-seven current and former
student-athletes and cheerleaders were among 249 Saint
Augustine’s College graduates in the 2011 class who received
their degrees at the 144rd commencement Sunday (May 1) on the
campus Quadrangle.
Thirty-five percent (35%) of the graduating class were
student-athletes and cheerleaders which topped last year’s
percentage number (31%). The graduating number among
student-athletes is higher than the previous two years (56 and 48)
although this is the first time the list included cheerleaders.
The graduating class included men’s track and field standout
Orolando Duffus (St. Catherine, Jamaica), who was the 2010 CIAA
Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Football had the most graduates
among the sports with 25 followed by basketball with 15 and track
and field with 12.
Saint Augustine’s College won the CIAA highest grade point
average award in four sports including football, women’s
basketball and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field. The
Falcons also won CIAA championships in men’s indoor and
outdoor track and field.
Major General Ronald L. Bailey gave the commencement address. Below
