June 9, 2011

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University has announced that Mat Phelps will become the Director of Soccer, beginning immediately.  Phelps has been the Head Men’s Soccer Coach for the past two seasons at Chowan.  He led his 2010 squad to a 3-16 overall record, which signaled the most wins in a single season since Chowan transitioned from Division III to Division II in 2006.

On being named Director of Soccer, Phelps said, “It is exciting for me and for the program.  This is a positive move because we are moving forward with one mindset.  I am very excited to add the differences that the women’s game brings.  This will certainly build support within our program.”

Phelps was a four-year starter and captain for the men's soccer program at Hope International University in Fullerton, California. While attending HIU, Phelps developed his love for teaching the sport of soccer at Don Lugo High School, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons.

After graduation from HIU in 2004, Phelps accepted an assistant coaching position at Redlands High School in Redlands, California.  He served as the head JV coach and assistant varsity coach where he helped guide the program to 28 wins over two seasons.  Phelps also coached the U-19 Silver-Elite boys’ soccer team for the Titans Football Club in Inland Empire, California until accepting the position at Chowan.

Phelps holds an advanced national diploma through the NSCAA.  He and his wife, Joy, have two daughters, Abigail (3) and Eden (infant).
