Chowan's Nate McMillan heads to London with Team USA
MURFREESBORO- Chowan alumnus Nate McMillan seeks gold as he
heads to London for the 2012 Summer Olympics, and looks to earn his
second Olympic medal as an assistant basketball coach under Mike
Krzyzewski.
McMillan attend Chowan (a junior college at the time) from
1982-1984. He is known as one of the best basketball players
to play for the blue and white, and was the first student-athlete
to earn First Team All-American status for the institution upon his
selection to the NJCAA All-American team in 1984.
Additionally, McMillan has been inducted to both the Hall of Fame
at Chowan, and the National Junior College Men's Basketball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame.
McMillan went on to play basketball at North Carolina State
University, and led the Wolfpack to a spot in the Elite Eight of
the NCAA Tournament during the 1985-1986 season.
After his college career, McMillan was selected in the first round
of the 1986 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. He spent
all twelve years of his professional playing career with the
organization, and was honored for his service to the team when his
jersey was retired in 1999. McMillan (also referred to
as “Mr. Sonic”), coached the SuperSonics until 2005,
when he moved on to work with the Portland Trail Blazers
organization.
McMillan has served as an assistant coach for the USA National Team
under Krzyzewski for the past seven years. He coaches along
with Jim Boeheim, the head men's basketball coach at Syracuse
University, and Mike D'Antoni, former coach of the New York
Knicks. As part of the USA National Team coaching staff,
McMillan has helped Team USA compile a 49-1 record since
2006. This record includes a gold medal finish at the 2008
Olympics in Beijing.
Team USA begins their quest for gold on July 29th against
France.
