Clements, Brayboy Named Bowlers of the Month after Event III Performance

 

CHARLOTTE, NC – Ten bowling teams participated in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (CIAA) Bowling Event III held on March 10 – 12 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Fayetteville State University led overall and in the Southern Division while the ladies of Virginia State University emerged atop the Northern Division.

The FSU Lady Broncos led the Southern Division with an undefeated 8-0 record and a total of 8,344 pins.  Senior Jasmin Aponte bowled all ten games and led the Broncos with a total of 1,731 total pins (173.10 avg. pins/match).  CIAA Rookie of the Month Leslie Brayboy finished sixth overall at the event with a total of 1,278 total pins and 182.52 average pins/match.

Saint Augustine’s University finished second in the Southern Division after breaking even with a 4-4 event record while knocking down 6,238 total pins. Rounding out the division was Shaw University, who finished the event 5-7 with a total of 6,221 pins, Johnson C. Smith University (2-6, 6,434 total pins), and Livingstone College who finished 1-7 with a total of 5,562 pins.

In the North, Virginia State placed first with a perfect 8-0 record and total of 8,291 total pins.  Senior Rebecca Clements led the team with 1,826 total pins and 182.60 average pins/match to earn March Bowler of the Month honors.  Sophomore Ariel Haith finished second on the team and third amongst all individuals with 1,794 total points (179.40 avg. pins/match).

Bowie State University came in second for the Northern Division with a 6-2 record and total of 7,882 pins.  Following the Lady Bulldogs was Chowan University, who finished the event 4-4 with 6,702 pins, Virginia Union University (2-6, 6,570 total pins), and Elizabeth City State University, who marked an 0-8 record with 5,613 pins.

Eight CIAA teams will qualify for the 2017 Bowling Championships, held in Chesapeake, Virginia March 24-26. The event is free and open to the public.
