Carroll resigns; Furlough promoted to head baseball coach at Chowan

July 28, 2011

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University has announced the resignation of Head Baseball Coach Aaron Carroll and the promotion ot Taylor Furlough to replace him. Carroll has accepted a coaching position at Dawson Community College, located in Glendive, Montana. Furlough had been an assistant for the past four seasons,

In his seven seasons as skipper of the Hawks, Carroll compiled a record of 190-143-2. His 190 coaching victories are the most since Chowan became a four-year institution (1992). He led the 2011 Hawks to a CIAA regular season championship after amassing a 25-3 conference record. He was also named CIAA Coach of the Year last season.

During his tenure in Murfreesboro, Carroll won two NCCAA South Region Championships, coached eight NCCAA All Americans, and more than 20 NCCAA All South Region players. In ten overall seasons as a collegiate head coach, Carroll has a 279-225-2 overall coaching record.

“Coach Carroll's resignation came as a surprise. He has been one of the most consistent winners in his stint as Head Coach at Chowan. His teams were well disciplined and always at the top of the list for team grade point averages. His leadership, professionalism and strong fund-raising ability will be missed. He leaves to coach in Montana, the fishing and hunting capital of the U.S.  He continues to live his dream,” remarked Director of Athletics Dennis Helsel.

As assistant coach, Furlough worked primarily with the Hawks pitching staff. In 2011, the Hawks placed three hurlers on the All-CIAA teams. Furlough, a 2005 Chowan graduate, is no stranger to the baseball program after playing four seasons under Carroll.  As part of the pitching staff in 2005, he helped the Hawks to an appearance at the NCCAA World Series. That same season, Furlough posted a team-low 1.20 ERA with a 4-1 record and five saves.

Prior to being hired by Carroll in January of 2008, Furlough spent two seasons on the Chowan football staff as an offensive backs and wide receivers coach.

“(Chowan President) Dr. White and I discussed the options to replace Coach Carroll and came to a singular decision. It is Taylor Furlough's time to lead. Taylor played at Chowan and coached, at different times, two sports (football and baseball) at Chowan. His maturity and rapport with student-athletes make this choice an easy one. His selection provides this young team stability and solidifies the team's efforts to win its first CIAA championship. Chowan baseball is in good hands,” said Helsel.
