2005 Pioneer Bowl moves to Charlotte
October 11, 2005
Hampton, VA - The 2005 Pioneer Bowl is headed to Charlotte. The
game will be held on Saturday, December 3 at Memorial Stadium. The
Bowl Game featuring teams from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SIAC) was moved from Mobile, Alabama because of
logistical concerns following the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina.
An official announcement will be made at the CIAA Basketball
Roundup in Charlotte on Thursday. The game will be televised live
on ESPN Classic.
“Regrettably, we have had to move the Pioneer Bowl from
Mobile,” said Leon Kerry, CIAA Commissioner. “However,
we are excited about the prospects of the Pioneer Bowl in
Charlotte. Other locations were considered, however, with the 2006
CIAA Tournament coming to Charlotte, we already know the Queen City
is one of America’s great sports cities.”
While there are numerous “classics” played annually in
college football, the Pioneer Bowl is the only NCAA-certified bowl
game involving historically black college conferences. The winner
not only gets bragging rights, but the right to take home the
vaunted Pioneer Bowl Cup. The first Pioneer Bowl game was played in
1997 in Atlanta when Kentucky State downed Livingstone 30-28. Last
year in Mobile, Shaw downed Tuskegee 30-28, ending the CIAA’s
three-game losing streak to the SIAC.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase both the SIAC,
the CIAA and the Charlotte Community, not only within the region
but around the nation, since the game will be broadcast to millions
through ESPN Classic” said SIAC Commissioner Dr. William
Lide. “The SIAC looks forward to taking back the Pioneer Bowl
Cup.”
