CIAA Great and NFL Hall of Famer Art Shell to deliver keynote at CIAA Football Banquet

Hampton, VA - Art Shell, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will deliver the keynote address at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Football Awards and Championship Game Banquet. The banquet will be held at the Downtown Durham Marriott on Thursday, November 3 in conjunction with the CIAA Football Championship Game on Saturday, November 5 in Durham.

Shell was selected to the Hall of Fame in 1989 after an outstanding career as an offensive tackle with the Oakland Raiders from 1968-1982. Shell was drafted by the Raiders out of Maryland State-Eastern Shore. He played in 207 regular season games and 24 playoff contests, including Super Bowls XI and XV. He also appeared in eight Pro Bowls.

After a Hall of Fame playing career, Shell became the Los Angeles Raiders’ offensive line coach from 1983-1989, and was named the team’s head coach during the 1989 season. He compiled a 56-41 won-lost record as head coach through the 1994 season. Shell was the offensive line coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 1995-96, and Atlanta Falcons from 1997-2000.

Shell has been working for the National Football League since 2002 as the appeals officer for player discipline.

Shell now supervises all NFL football operations and development, including regular and postseason operations, NFL Europe League operations, the NFL Officiating Department, the NFL’s relationship with college football, and the league’s youth football activities. He also serves as a non-v
