Queen Is King as Bulldogs Edge Golden Bulls

Queen Is King as Bulldogs Edge Golden Bulls

Football Week in Review for the week ending September 9, 2006 (Week 3)

September 10, 2006

Against the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls, Bowie State's Nathaniel Queen was virtually unstoppable. Playing in the aptly named "Queen City", Queen carried the ball 33 times for a career high 176 yards and a touchdown and averaged over five yards a carry.  But as bullish as Queen's performance was, ultimately JCSU was done in by struggles in their kicking game as Bowie State got out of Charlotte with a 14-13 win.

Bowie State led 14-0 at the half on quarterback Lamar Manigo's 10 yard touchdown pass to Sean Napper in the first quarter and Queen's six-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

Johnson C. Smith got on the scoreboard on the their first possession of the third quarter when they put together a nine-play, 52 yard drive that was capped by Yannick Murray's two-yard run for a score.  Kicker Herbert Collins would add the PAT to make the score 14-7.

In the fourth quarter Smith appeared to seize momentum, putting together a 15-play drive that covered 74-yards and consumed over eight minutes. Running back Earnest Hodge finished the drive off when he plunged in from one yard out for a score.  The Golden Bulls were a PAT away from knotting the game up, but Collins missed the PAT leaving Bowie State with a 14-13 lead with 3:52 remaining in the game.

JCSU's defense forced Bowie State into a three-and-out on their next possession.  On their next possession, Golden Bull quarterback Donja Goodson converted on a fourth down and 20 when he connected with Eddie Minter on a 44-yard pass to keep J.C. Smith's drive alive.  Bowie State's defense would hold from there, harassing Goodson into three incomplete passes and forcing the Golden Bulls to attempt a long game winning field goal with 15 seconds remaining.  Collins' attempt at a career long 49-yard field goal was well short of the mark allowing the Bulldogs to escape with the 14-13 win.
