Vikings Improve to 3-0 with Win Over Broncos

Curtis Rich threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns as Elizabeth City State downed Fayetteville State 43-31 in the 9th Annual Down East Classic in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Elizabeth City State (3-0, 1-0)  got on the board early in the first quarter when Fayetteville State (1-3, 0-1) was forced to punt on their opening possession.   Billy Wiggins fielded the punt at his own 29-yard line and raced 71-yards for a touchdown.  Daniel Mendez added the PAT as the Vikings opened up a 7-0 lead on the Broncos.

The Broncos would tie the game at 7-7 on their next possession when Calvin Harris’ 13-yard touchdown run capped an 8-play, 80 yard drive.  Fayetteville State would extend its lead on their next possession on Eric Lamoureux’s 32-yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead.  Rich would respond with the first of his four touchdown passes when he connected with a streaking Chris Carter (6 catches, 111 yards) on a 75-yard touchdown pass.  Mendez’s PAT attempt failed as the Vikings regained a 13-10 lead with 2:04 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Broncos would forge ahead again on quarterback Jonathan Autry’s (242 yards passing, 3 TDs) 34-yard touchdown pass to Daryl Barnett ( 6 catches, 134 yards).  Lamoureux would add the PAT for a 17-13 lead.  The Broncos appeared to be driving toward another scoring opportunity when Viking defensive back Dwight Richardson intercepted an errant Autry pass at ECSU’s 10-yard line.  The Vikings responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Rich’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Lonnie Davis with eight seconds left in the half.  Mendez would add the PAT as the Vikings took a 20-17 lead to the locker room at the break.

The offensive fireworks continued in the third quarter as Elizabeth City State extended their lead to 26-17 when Carter caught his second touchdown of the evening on a 15-yard pass from Rich.  Fayetteville State would answer right back when Barnett caught his second touchdown of the game when he hooked up with Autry for a 30-yard score. The Broncos added the PAT to trim the Vikings’ lead to 26-24 with 9:10 left in the third quarter.   Rich responded with his fourth touchdown of the night with  22 seconds left in the quarter when he hit Casey Owens on an 84-yard scoring strike to push the Vikings’ lead to 33-24.

Following a 40-yard field goal that extended ECSU’s lead to 36-24 early in the fourth quarter, Fayetteville State would rally again as Autry finished off a 65-yard drive with a short touchdown pass to Edward Agans to cut the Vikings’ lead to 36-31 with 7:10 left in the game.  Two possessions later, the Vikings would thwart any hopes of a FSU rally when they recovered a fumble deep in Bronco territory.  Three plays later, they converted the miscue into points as Brandon Fields plunged in from 3-yards out with 19 seconds left for the game’s final margin of 43-31.
