CIAA Football Week in Review
For the week ending September 30, 2006
(Week 6)
Eagles Down Bulldogs 35-13 in Championship Rematch
Stadford Brown threw for a career-high 291 yards and four touchdowns and the Eagle defense limited Bowie State to just 153 yards of total offense as North Carolina Central (5-0, 3-0) downed Bowie State University 35-13 yesterday in the Prince George's Classic in Bowie, Maryland.
Brown, who played at nearby Dunbar High School in Washington, DC, threw first half touchdown passes to Charles Futrell (7 receptions, 110 yards), Kenneth Broadway, and Julius McClellan as the Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead on the Bulldogs.
Bowie State (2-3, 0-2) would finally get on the scoreboard with 16 seconds left in the first half after a Brown interception was converted into an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Deon Trotter (108 passing yards) to wide receiver Anthony Green as the Eagles took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Eagles would extend their lead to 28-7 on Greg Pruitt's 7-yard touchdown run which capped a 12-play, 65-yard drive.
Bowie State would get their second score of the day early in the
fourth quarter when Nathaniel Queen rumbled in from two yards out
to cut the Eagles' lead to 28-13. Queen, who came into the
contest as the conference's leading rusher at 123 yards a game, was
effectively bottled up by a stingy Eagle defense and finished with
a season-low 44 yards on 15 carries. NCCU's defense was led
by linebacker Naim Abdul-Malik with five tackles and a sack as the
Eagles held the conference's top ground attack (168 yards per game)
to 78 rushing yards.
On the following drive NCCU would close out the scoring when Brown connected with tight end Kenneth Broadway (4 receptions, 107 yards, 2 TDs) on a 21-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 35-13.
Next week, NCCU travels to Raleigh, N.C. to take on Saint Augustine's College, while Bowie State travels to Shaw for an important divisional match up.
