CIAA Football Week in Review
For the week ending October 28, 2007 (Week 10)
PANTHERS TAKE LEAD IN EAST; BEARS HOLD SERVE IN WEST
ETTRICK, VA- Lamar Little accounted for six touchdowns and 260 yards of total offense as the Virginia Union Panthers improved to 8-1 and kept their CIAA title hopes alive with a decisive 42-27 win over longtime rival Virginia State.
Little scored on a six-yard run and threw touchdown passes of 8 and 70 yards to Steven Miller (4 receptions, 118 yards) as the Panthers, who came into the game ranked sixth in the Southeast Region, opened up a 21-0 first quarter lead on the Trojans. Little got his third touchdown pass of the day midway through the second quarter when he connected with Terence Cunningham for 16 yards as VUU pushed their lead to 28-0 over the stunned Trojans.
The Trojans, playing in front of a large homecoming crowd, finally got untracked offensively when quarterback Michael Terry finished off a 12-play, 91-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Davian Richards as VSU trailed 28-7 at the half.
Little would toss two more touchdown passes to Phillip Taylor (3
receptions, 86 yards) in the third quarter to extend the Panthers'
lead to 42-14. With VUU in control of the game, Little headed to
the bench after three quarters of work in favor of backup Michael
Henderson.
Terry would hook up two more times with Richards for scores in the
fourth quarter as the Trojans made the final margin a more
respectable 42-27. Richards finished the game with a
career-high 10 receptions for 122 yards and three touchdowns and
Terry threw for 225 yards for the Trojans who fell to 4-5 and 3-3
in the CIAA.
With the win, coupled with Elizabeth City's 14-7 loss to Saint
Paul's, the Panthers can clinch the Eastern Division title and an
appearance in the CIAA Championship game with a win over
Fayetteville State in their regular season finale next Saturday in
Fayetteville.
In other conference action,
BOWIE, MD-Ryne Powell kicked three field goals, including a game
winning 25-yarder in the fourth quarter as the Shaw Bears rallied
to edge the Bowie State Bulldogs 16-14 yesterday in Bowie,
Maryland.
With the win, Shaw improves to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the CIAA and can clinch the Western Division title and a berth in the CIAA Championship game next week with a win over cross-town rival Saint Augustine's. Conference Scoreboard
