For the week ending August 25, 2007 (Week 1)
Golden Bulls Blank Tigers in Season Opener
CHARLOTTE, NC-Johnson C. Smith got big plays from their defense and special teams as they opened the 2007 season with a 24-0 shutout over visiting Edward Waters College from Jacksonville, Florida.
After a scoreless first period, Johnson C. Smith scored their first touchdown of the season when quarterback Carlton Richardson (122 passing yards) hooked up with Jeremy Franklin on a 33-yard pass. Kicker Herbert Collins added the PAT as the Golden Bulls opened up a 7-0 lead on the Tigers.
On their next drive, the Bulls put together a 9-play, 55-yard drive that was capped by a 24-yard field goal by Collins as the half expired, pushing JCSU to a 10-0 lead at the break.
A scoreless third quarter gave way to defensive fireworks in the
fourth as the Golden Bulls blew the game open on a 30-yard return
of blocked punt by Fred Hoskins and a 95-yard interception return
(3rd longest in JCSU history) by Garrison McCormick as JCSU
stretched their lead to 24-0.
In addition to McCormick's interception, Smith's defense also got
big contributions from Jimmie Massenburg, who recorded eight
tackles, one sack, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries as
the Bulls recorded their first shutout since a 36-0 win over
Benedict in 1996.
