PANTHERS STAY IN TITLE HUNT WITH WIN OVER BULLDOGS
RICHMOND, VA- Lamar Little threw for 216 yards and four touchdowns as the Virginia Union Panthers improved to 7-1 and 4-1 in the CIAA with a 27-14 win over the Bowie State Bulldogs in the annual Gold Bowl Classic, yesterday.
Little threw first quarter touchdowns to Steven Miller and Philip Taylor as the Panthers jumped out to a 13-0 lead on the Bulldogs. Momentum would swing in the Bulldogs' favor in the second quarter when defensive back Terrence Peete picked off a Little pass and returned it 26-yards for a touchdown as Bowie State trimmed the Panthers' lead to 14-7. The Bulldogs (3-5, 3-2) then took a 14-13 lead when tailback Isaac Redman (121 rushing yards) ran in from one yard out to cap a five-play, 65 yard drive with 5:06 remaining in the second quarter.
With just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Panthers would regain control of the game as the ever dangerous Little hooked up with wideout Andre Winston on an 80-yard scoring strike that would give the Panthers a 20-14 lead at the half.
In the second half, VUU's defense took control, forcing two turnovers and holding the Bulldogs scoreless. Little would score the only points of the second half when he hooked up with Taylor on a 16-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter for the game's final margin of 27-14.
Next Saturday, Virginia Union travels down I-95 to take on Virginia State in one of the CIAA's fiercest rivalries as the Trojans play host to the Panthers for their Homecoming.
