Fayetteville State enters Division II Coaches' Poll at #24

WACO, TEX.– With a 46-43 win over Harding, Arkansas-Monticello jumps into the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll at No. 23 for the fist time since November 7, 2000. The Weevils are 7-2 on the season as they prepare for a Top 25 match-up against No. 6 North Alabama on Saturday.

Grand Valley State still sits No. 1, but lost two first place votes after having to come from behind to beat then-No. 23 Ashland, 48-42. The Lakers earned 21 of a possible 26 first place votes. No. 2 Abilene Christian gathered up the other five first place votes after handing then-No. 16 Tarleton State a 37-17 loss. No. 3 Northwest Missouri State edged past Washburn, 24-21, while No. 4 Bloomsburg blanked Shippensburg, 21-0. Delta State still sits No. 5 after a 21-3 win over Southern Arkansas.

North Alabama leap-frogged California (Pa.) and Minnesota-Duluth to No. 6 this week after the Lions beat then-No. 9 Valdosta State, 41-23. California (Pa.) is No. 7 after a 31-10 win over Slippery Rock, while Minnesota-Duluth fell to No. 8 despite a 48-21 victory over Bemidji State. Central Washington jumped to No. 9 following a 38-31 win over Western Oregon. West Texas A&M blanked Angelo State, 27-0, and moved back into the Top 10.

No. 11 Tuskegee beat Kentucky State, 52-34, and clinched the SIAC with two games remaining in the season. Pittsburg State is No. 12 this week after a 34-7 win over Fort Hays State. Chadron State stays at No. 13 after coming from behind to beat Colorado School of Mines, 34-17. Valdosta State fell five spots to No. 14 after its loss to North Alabama, while Carson-Newman moved up two places to No. 15 following a 34-3 win over Brevard.

No. 16 Wingate rebounded from its first loss of the year to beat Catawba, 34-24. American International jumped up to No. 17 after a 43-24 win over Assumption. Indiana (Pa.) dominated Clarion, 66-16, and moved up three places to No. 18, while West Chester jumped five spots to No. 19 following a 60-6 victory over Cheyney. Tarleton only tumbled four spots to No. 20 after its loss to No. 2 Abilene Christian.

Edinboro fell to No. 21 after its loss to Mercyhurst, 24-21, while Seton Hill jumped back into the poll at No. 22 by blanking Concord, 31-0. Arkansas-Monticello is No. 23. Fayetteville State is the third newcomer to the poll this week. The Broncos beat St. Augustine’s, 20-16, and are ranked No. 24 with a 7-2 record. Ashland lost to No. 1 Grand Valley State and only dropped two places to No. 25.

Head-to-Head
Three games featuring teams ranked in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Poll highlight this weekend’s action. The first Top 25 match-up is for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division as No. 4 Bloomsburg hosts No. 19 West Chester. Both teams come into the game with identical 6-0 marks in conference. West Chester leads the all-time series, 44-20, and won last year’s meeting.
The second match-up is for second place in the Gulf South Conference as No. 23 Arkansas-Monticello travels to No. 6 North Alabama. The Lions have won five straight and own the series lead, 7-3. The Weevils last win over UNA came in 2002, 30-14. No. 15 Carson-Newman hosts No. 16 Wingate in the final Top 25 match-up this weekend, with first place in the South Atlantic Conference on the line. The Eagles have dominated the series with Wingate, winning 19 of the 20 contests between the schools. Wingate’s only win came in 1995, 25-24.

West Chester wide receiver Mike Washington caught five passes for 120 yards and a touchdown in the Golden Rams 60-6 win over Cheyney. He is now ninth all-time in NCAA Division II history for career yards receiving with 4,327, and third all-time in NCAA DII history with 54 touchdown receptions ... Chadron State defensive back Trevor Hyatt intercepted three passes in the second half, each inside the CSC five-yard line, to help the Eagles comeback for a 34-17 win over Colorado School of Mines.
