Asberry & Ellis Named Pigskin Club Award Recipients

Raleigh, NC - The Pigskin Club of Washington, DC has named Darrell Asberry, Head Football Coach of Shaw University and the reigning 2008 CIAA Champions, and Louis Ellis as the CIAA Coach and Player of the Year for the second straight year. Asberry will receive the W. Henry "Stud" Greene Award and Ellis will receive the James Guy "Pete" Tyson Award at the black tie dinner in Washington, DC at the 71st Annual Awards Dinner Capital Hilton Hotel on January 23, 2009.

Ellis (SR/DL/6'3/312/Jackson, MS) was named the 2008 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. This season he anchored the Shaw Bears defensive unit to the national number one spot of the NCAA Division II in total defense (#1), rushing defense (#1), and tackles for loss (#1). Louis ranks at the CIAA's top in tackles for loss, 16 solo-8 assts. Ellis comes in second in the conference for sacks with 8 (.80avg/g) and is also credited with 60 total tackles. He was a major part in Shaw's second consecutive CIAA Championship helping them to a 8-3 record.
Asberry stated, "I am extremely honored to win this award for the second straight year. Our team has worked hard and the recognition of this award speaks loudly about the great athletes and coaching staff that represent our football program. Ellis is an incredible player and he certainly deserves all of the national accolades that he has received."
