CIAA Football Players of the Week- Week Three

Offensive Lineman of the Week:

Melvin Rogers, Chowan University

Position:  LG Height:  6-3 Weight: 320  Class: Jr.  Hometown: Margaretsville, NC 
Comments: Melvin led the offensive line in which saw his team gain 183 yards on the ground. Many running plays were run behind the blocking of Rogers, including a 49 yard touchdown scamper that cut Brevard's lead to three points. 

 

Receiver of the Week:

Jeremy Franklin, Johnson C. Smith University

Position: WR Height:  6-3  Weight:  200  Class:  So.  Hometown:  Casselberry, VA 
Comments:  Franklin had 10 catches for an astonishing 237 yards and three touchdowns in JCSU's thrilling come from behind 37-31 victory over Edward Waters in OT. Franklin broke his own Irwin Belk Complex record for most receiving yards in a game. He also crossed the 1,000 receiving yard threshold in his young career. 

 

Offensive Back of the Week:

Carlton Richardson, Johnson C. Smith University

Position: QB  Class: Sr.  Weight: 190  Height: 6-2  Hometown: Columbia, SC

Comments:  Richardson orchestrated an offense that battled back from an 18-point deficit late in the third quarter to defeat Edward Waters College 37-31 in OT. Richardson broke his own Irwin Belk Complex record for most passing yards. The senior connected on 20-of-31 pass attempts for a career high 339 yards and two touchdowns. Richardson also used his legs and carried the ball 12 times for 19 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Defensive Lineman of the Week:

Davon Clark, Virginia Union University

Position:  DL  Height:  6-3  Weight:  285  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Paterson, NJ 
Comments: Anchored a defensive line that limited FVSU to only 44 passing yards and 62 yards rushing. He added 4 tackles including one for loss.

 

Linebacker of the Week:

Jomo Brown, Chowan University

Position: LB  Height:  6-1  Weight:  240  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Port Charlotte, FL

Comments:  Jomo Brown tallied five tackles at linebacker with two tackles for a loss of six yards. His most effective play came in the 4th quarter when he intercepted a Brevard pass and returned it for 34 yards. His interception set up the game-winning score. 


Defensive Back of the Week:

Rod Jones, Elizabeth City State University

Position:  FS  Height:  6-1  Weight:  185  Class:  Sr.  Hometown:  Sussex, VA 
Comments:  Jones best last week's output with another career day against Tusculum. He led all defenders with a game and career high 15 tackles (11 solo, 4 assisted) including one for a loss of a yard, along with a forced fumble, a pass breakup and a sack for a loss of a yard. 


Rookie of the Week:

Quinton Toomer, Johnson C. Smith University

Position: LB  Height:  5-9  Weight: 211  Class: Fr.  Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Comments: Toomer was a forced to be reckoned with in his first start as a Golden Bull. He led all defenders with nine total tackles, (4 solo and 5 assisted) in JCSU's 37-31 come from behind OT victory over Edward Waters. 

 

Specialty Player of the Week:

Daniel Mendez, Elizabeth City State University

Position: P/K Height:  5-11 Weight:  190 Class:  Jr.  Hometown: Riverside, CA 
Comments: Mendez assisted greatly in the Vikings near comeback against Tusculum as the punter of two successful onside kicks, one of which he recovered to set up a score which also came from him a 30-yard field goal to bring the Vikings to within 8-points with 1:01 remaining. In the game he also punted 10 times amassing 355 yards, a long of 46 yards with 3 punts landing inside the 20. He added 4 kickoffs for 257 yards and average of 64.2.  

 

Coach of the Week:

Kenny Phillips, Fayetteville State University 
Comments: Kenny Phillips won his 50th career victory in 9 seasons with a 63-0 decision over Lincoln (PA). After scoring the 63 points early in the second quarter, Coach Phillips called the horses off and stuck to a running game that would wind down the clock. The margin of victory was the largest in school history and for Coach Phillips.
