SHAW BEARS RUN TO BIG WIN OVER EDWARD
WATERS
JACKSONVILLE, FL-Running backs Raymon Williams and Johnny Wooten combined for four touchdowns and 232 of Shaw's 255 rushing yards to lead the Bears to a convincing 55-13 win over Edward Waters College last night in Jacksonville.
The Bears, the defending CIAA champs, got touchdown runs from Wooten and Aaron Ellison to jump out to a 13-0 first quarter lead on the home standing Tigers. Waters would get on the scoreboard late in the 2nd quarter when Travis Knight picked off a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked and the Tigers trailed the Bears 13-6 at the half.
In the third quarter, Shaw turned a close game into a rout, scoring on two touchdown runs of 4 and 68 yards by Williams; a 39-yard return of a blocked punt by Monte Coleman; and a 47-yard pass form Marcus Brooks (151 passing yards) to DeAndre Okanji (62 receiving yards) to open up a 41-13 lead on the stunned Tigers.
In the fourth, Wooten (106 rushing yards) scored his second touchdown of the day on a short 1-yard burst and Jayson Royal caught a 41-yard touchdown from quarterback Gary Moise to complete the 55-13 rout.
With the win, the Bears even their record at 1-1 heading into next week's huge matchup with Division I (Football Championship Subdivision) opponent Texas Southern of the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the Capital City Classic in Sacramento, California.
****Due to Tropical Storm Hanna, the Virginia State vs Johnson C. Smith match-up was postponed until today, Sunday, September 7 at 1:30pm- Rogers Stadium, Ettrick, VA.
