SAINT AUGUSTINE'S DOWNS 14TH RANKED CATAWBA
SALISBURY, NC-Quarterback Anthony Brown's scored on a 12-yard run early in the fourth quarter to lead visiting St. Augustine's to a 14-7 victory over 14th ranked Catawba on Saturday in Salisbury.
Brown accounted for 128 yards and two touchdowns and the defense limited the Indians to 64 rushing yards and forced two turnovers that led to scores as the Falcons won the season opener for both teams.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons got on the scoreboard first when Brown used one play to hookup with Lendell Bembo on a 35-yard scoring pass to open up a 7-0 lead. The touchdown was set up on the previous play by Steven Stanback's interception at the Catawba 35-yard line.
The Indians tied the game at 7-7 when quarterback Howard Williamson connected with Brandon Bunn on a 29-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the second quarter.
Neither team could put together a scoring drive in the third quarter. But, the Falcons got a huge play from their special teams in the fourth quarter, when they recovered a muffed punt deep inside Indian territory to set up what would be Brown's game winning touchdown- one play later- for a 14-7 Falcon lead.
Catawba put together a sustained drive late in the fourth quarter, moving the ball from their own six-yard line down to the Saint Augustine's 11-yard line, but any hopes of tying the game were dashed when the Falcons' defense held on the Indians' attempt to convert on fourth down and five and Saint Augustine's was able to run out the clock for the huge season opening win.
