Shaw’s Quintez Smith Named Division II Defensive
Player of the Week
September 2, 2009
(Raleigh, NC) – Quintez Smith – whose three “pick
sixes” powered Shaw’s win over Elizabeth City State
– was today named d2football.com’s National Defensive
Player of the Week. This caps a week where he was also named CIAA
Defensive Back of the Week, and one of four finalists for the HBCU
Player of the Week.
Smith (6-1, 187, New Orleans, LA) had three interception returns
for touchdowns with a total of 194 return yards in Saturday’s
game. He also recovered a fumble in the end zone to stop an ECSU
scoring drive, and had three tackles and six assists.
Shaw University Head Coach Darrell Asberry said, “Let’s
be honest, Quintez’s game was a once in a lifetime
performance. You could go to a lot of games without seeing a night
like that.” He continued, “He’s a transfer (from
UT-Chattanooga) and has worked hard to get here. His patience has
paid off.” D2football.com is the nation’s leading
source of news concerning NCAA Division II Football programs. Their
national team rankings are considered one of the two Division II
polls of record (the other being the Division II Rankings by the
American Football Coaches Association). Theirs is the most
prestigious DII Player of the Week award.
Shaw (1-0) next travels to Daytona Beach, FL, where they will step
out of Division II and face FCS power Bethune-Cookman. Shaw’s
next home game is Sat., Sept. 12 against Concordia (AL) at 6 p.m.
at Millbrook High School.
